Burglars are looking for all sorts of ways to get into your house. Through doors and windows, and according to Forbes home, nine percent of the time, they’re getting in through your garage door. In fact, that may be their only stop. Think about it, you keep all sorts of valuables in your garage. From power tools and cars to mountain bikes and motorcycles. On a Saturday afternoon, garages can be pretty easy targets, especially when you’re in the backyard mowing the lawn and the garage door is left wide open. This blog will discuss 5 ways to prevent garage door break-ins.

Don’t Leave the Garage Door Open

This may seem like a simple and obvious tip, but don’t leave the garage door open. Burglars can get a clear view of what’s in your garage if you leave the door open. And there’s no easier way of breaking in than if you leave the door open and a burglar can just walk in and walk back out with your things.

Don’t Use an Easy Passcode

If you use a garage door keypad to open and close your garage door, make sure you are using a difficult passcode. Avoid passcodes that are easy to guess like “1234” or your street address. It may even be beneficial to change your passcode every year, so the numbers don’t wear out on the keypad.

Don’t Leave Your Garage Door Opener in Your Car

Do you park your cars outside? If so, make sure to bring your garage door controller inside at night. If a burglar breaks into your car, they can use your garage door controller to gain access to your garage, then gain access to your home. If you take your garage door controller inside, that’s one easy way to prevent a garage door break-in.

Clear Landscaping

Make sure your yard and the shrubbery surrounding your garage are well taken care of. A cared for yard gives burglars fewer places to hide when lurking around your yard.

Activate Night Guard

The best way to protect your garage from burglars is to install a home security system. One feature of CPI Security’s home security system is Night Guard™. An optional service that provides protection to the perimeter of the home in the dead of night. From 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., when CPI’s AI-powered cameras detect a threat, CPI’s monitoring center will assess the situation and issue deterrents like warning lights, sirens, or utilize two-way audio. If the subject continues to act suspiciously or is committing a crime, CPI’s monitoring center operators will contact the proper authorities. This is a great way to deter bad actors from breaking into your garage. For more information on CPI Security’s Night Guard, visit our blog or website
